So, yesterday went really well. The day after Labor day was pretty successful. Today. Mid-week. Wednesday. Is the day I went crazy. Okay, not really, but it was a bad afternoon. I felt like I had to baby the kids every step of the way. I knew coming into 7th grade there would be a lot of that, but today I was questioning whether my patience (or lack there of) would last the whole year. My huge 6th hour class was the worst. My 7th hour (my favorite) could hardly pull me out of the funk! 6th hour they would just not stop talking. Warmup-talking. Spelling test-talking. Quiet reading time- guess what?! - talking. UGH! Just get to work! I'm always super nervous because I feel like half the students will not hand in their pre-test on Friday in order to take the post test. I found two on the floor after class. Grrrrrrreat!
As Enrique tries to pull me out of this mood with a little "I like it", I look at the heap of work on my desk and cringe. 2 days till the weekend? 2 days till my love? (Take that how you'd like). Either way, this weekend can not come fast enough. I can't wait till I'm like 3 weeks in and everyone is finally in a routine! Until then, there might be more posts like this. Sadly.
Sincerely,
Tired Teacher
(Haha, doesn't that remind you of the Dear Ann sign off in the newspaper?!)

I Love My Name
A wise person once wrote. Sometimes things start out a little blurry, but with time (and love) those things eventually become very clear. That's not a direct quote. That wise person can't remember what he/she wrote originally. Ha
Second Day Reflections
Two days in at the middle school. I have to say my first two hours are a breeze. The students are so alert and quiet. Also, I have my two prep periods in between those classes so it's a nice break. As much as I love the quiet classes, I'm also starting to really enjoy those loud classes. Although they can be hard to control and I will probably end up losing my voice, they are so energetic. When I was done with the afternoon classes yesterday, I was questioning how I was going to make it through the year. After I moved some students around and gave it another shot, it went so great. I have 30 students in my 6th hour class so they are my loudest. I had a small word scramble on the board today and it ended up turning into a big game and the students were getting so into it. Unfortunately, I had to move them along because every hour today I ran out of time. Anyway, I felt it was necessary to give a few reactions to the first couple days, but I am spent now. Good thing I'm getting to bed early. It's getting harder and harder to wake up, not because I'm tired, but because it's now dark out in the morning!
Adios from the teacher world,
Marissa
ps. the best part of my day has to be when I can finally comb out my knotty hair and put it up in a pony tail. When 3 o'clock hits, you know where my hair will be! Hah

Real-Time Teaching
So, I can't help but laugh that my last post was about student teaching. I can't believe that was almost a year ago already. After student teaching, I was unemployed for a good 3-4 months. It was absolute hell; hated it. Then came summer. Filled with lots of work. Hah! I had two jobs, the long standing carferry and then I got a full-time job at the YMCA camp working with 9 and 10 years olds. It was a treat to say the least. Ha! The real reason I'm writing is because tomorrow happens to be my first day of being a real teacher. I feel like I have been waiting for this for forever and now, BAM, it's here. And I'm scared. Okay, not fully, but a little bit. Up until a week ago, I was supposed to be part-time at Lincoln High. Teacher quit, full-time, benefits, offer, me. Now, tomorrow, I embark on the journey of being a 7th grade teacher. Funny how I said I would never go younger than 8th grade, yet here I am. I'm actually very excited. I feel I might have to blog a lot more, if I have time of course, because there are probably going to be so many stories each week. I hope I can make it happen, but knowing me I will be too busy organizing my room and grading papers. If I don't write soon, I hope to at least write again at the end of the year! HA!
For all that care,

A New Adventure
Wow, it has been forever. I thought it might be a good time to revive my blog. I've been student teaching since September now and have already completed my middle school placement! It was an amazing experience and I miss my 8th graders terribly.
I'm not at Lincoln High School here in Manitowoc. It has been very enlightening and interested thus far. I couldn't have a better mentor to learn from. My supervising teacher is not only brilliant, but she helps me reflect on myself and is always there to listen when I feel a class went bad. Which a lot of them have!
I thought it would be interesting to start writing again to document my new teaching life. I graduate this Saturday and my birthday is this Sunday, so I have a lot coming up in the next few days. I said that after this weekend, I'm going to feel so old. Too much growing up going on here!
I will be keeping these much shorter, but hey.. why not write my thoughts down here!

Dublin and Paris: Expensive But Beautiful
So, I figured that since it has been forever I should probably update on my week traveling with Cari to Ireland and France. It's really hard to start typing this since we had so much fun and it's hard to recount all those funny little quirky times, but I'll give a brief overview.
Cari arrived two Fridays ago and I decided to meet her in Pisa (where she flew in) because then we'd be able to see the leaning tower of Pisa together. Met her at the airport and saw the HUGE bag she decided to bring so that I could pack up some of my stuff. The only probably is... it had no wheels. We had a really hard time carrying the bag around and we took a busride to see the tower. After we got our infamous "holding up the tower" pics, we got a few souveniors and then had to walk a ways back to the central train station. Let me tell you, bag with no wheels, not a good idea. It was so hard to carry it, we had to lug it probably over a mile with the sun beating on us. We survived, of course, but were exhausted by the time the train got into Florence. It was a little later in the day so we walked around a bit and then went out to eat with the roommates.
On Saturday, our flight didn't leave until later in the day so we bummed around all day, met Libbi's mother who was there for the week (oh yeah, it was our second spring break so everyone was traveling around Europe). Our flight to Dublin went pretty good except for the annoying people on the plane. We took a bus into the city center and found our hostel pretty easily. At first, none of the roommates (we were in a 8 female dorm) said anything to us, so we just decided to go get some SUBWAY and hit up a few bars. Well, oh my gosh, not only was subway expensive (which I still ate graciously) but so were the drinks. We ordered what had to end up being the smallest bloody mary's in the world for 7 EURO.. I was like, oh my gosh, so we decided to share a pint of guiness as well because obviously that was cheaper. The guiness was gross, of course, but at least we didn't buy another drink from there. There was also this guy singing live music though which was cool. Next, we went to this pub that was just down the street from our hostel. I wanted to go home, but Cari, after much begging and pleading, convinced me to stay out. We got vodka and sprites.. once again, smallest ever and it was like a half shot in there, we were pissed. Buuuuut, I'm a sucker for live music and they had a two guys, one with a guitar and the other with an accordian playing live Irish music. Needless to say, by the end of the night we were singing along.
The next day brought a new perspective. First, we were planning to go on the free 3-hour walking tour of Dublin (which I did in Scotland too, by the same company). It ended up being a really great time and very informational. We saw all the cathedrals and main streets. This, of course, was Easter day too, which happens to not be a very big holiday in Dublin, but we still had fun anyway. On the way home, at like 3p, we decided to get this beer cider and California wine from the local grocery store. So we were drinking it in our hostel dorm room and our roommates walked in and they ended up being so cool. They were teachers (my age) in France and were from California and Canada. So, we decided it would be neat if we all went out together that night in Dublin's artsy district called Temple Bar. Cari and I went out to eat quick before that and I had a delicious chicken caesar wrap with fries and Cari had the traditional Irish pot-pie. It was really good and by the time we got back, the girls were ready to head out. Immediately we were all meshing, which was sweet, and we just went downtown and got some drinks and listened to live music. At first Cari and I had Guiness, which sucked, as usual, but then we ordered what the other girls were drinking which were called snakebites. It's like beer, black current, and I'm not sure what else, but we pretty much drank those the rest of the night because they were cheap and good. We then went to a dance club and had some fun there as well. When we got to our hostel dorm room, the 2 girls that were not with us had locked us out which led to a very funny hallway encounter. Eventually we got in and passed out.
On Monday, our plans were pretty much just shopping and the guiness factory. The night before, we asked the trio of girls if they wanted to do it with us, and they thought it would be fun. We planned to meet at 1pm because they wanted to get breakfest and Cari and I wanted to shop. We went to this keep place called Pennys (like an Old Navy) and it was like the cheapest clothes ever. I bought like 5 swimsuits (one bottoms were only 2 Euro), some shirts, and a scarf. When we were in the check out line, we realized we had like 10 minutes to get to the Guiness factory and it was like 25 minutes away walking. So we have these brown paper bags full of clothes running through the streets of Dublin, for sure looked like we stole something. We finally find the place at 1:25 and turn the corner and there they are right in front of us walking up. Haha, they were late, too. So we went in and it was amazing. The factory is like a really nice and retro museum. It is like 10 floors and at the top they have this Gravity bar with windows all around where you get to claim your free guiness. After the self-guided tour, we went to the top and had our guiness. It was a little hard because we had drank so much the night before, but it was once again, a good time. After that, it was rainy and eveyone had to use the bathroom. Well, we were on the outskirts of town and had to walk back in. After finding a place to use the rest room, we saw a cathedral, and then stopped at Penny's..... again. Haha, I picked up another 10 things and then we got subway on the way home. Cari and I decided to chill for a little bit once we got back to the hostel and two new girls moved into our room, they were young british girls checking out Trinity College and they were hilarious. Our friends had to switch rooms that morning so they were no longer in there. We packed up our bags (I had like no room to spare since buying so much stuff at Penny's) and then hung out a bit. The girls ended up coming to our room and asked if we wanted to watch some TV and hang out for a bit, since we had to leave at like 4am for Paris. We watched some 90210 in English and then called it a night. We, sadly, said goodbye to our newly made friends and then went to bed (for a mere 4 hours).
We woke up in no time and called a taxi to head to the airport. We got there and although my bag got checked, it went smoothly. The flight to Paris was alright, but apparently there are no airports in Paris. Our airport was actually 1hr bus ride outside of Paris and it only took us to the outskirts of Paris. So when we got dropped off, we had no clue where to go, but just started walking, eventually we randomly came upon the arc de triumph, which is a big monument in Paris which was pretty cool. Once we were there, we saw the effiel tower in the distance, which LOOKed like it was only a few blocks away. We walked there, not a few blocks, but got some great pictures on the way. The Effiel tower was amazing and after we saw it (we knew we'd be back the next few days) we tried to find a metro to our place. After hours of walking (with my backpack and up since 4am) we found the metro and took it for like 20 minutes till we got to our hostel. It was in the GHET-TO.. for real. I was scared. Cari and I went out to try and find a grocery store, there was nothing open (it was like 6pm) and there were A LOT of men on the street saying stuff to us. We finally found this one place with Orange Juice and then went back to the hostel. Since we were up so long we just decided to sleep since we knew we weren't going out.
Okay, I'm going to try and sum up the rest in bullet points because this is not only getting long for you, but for me.
- We woke up and took the metro downtown.
- When we got there, we got a sandwich at a local vendor, not the greatest, but food.
- After eating it in the park under the Effiel tower, we decided to climb it.
- At this point, both Cari and my cameras decided to die. We would like turn it on and snap a picture quickly and then turn it off, we figured we had a good 15 pictures left before it died completely.
- The line wasn't bad and you can actually climb it from all four legs (even though one was closed). Let me tell you, I was freeeeeaking out climbing it. It's just round and round metal stairs until you get to the first platform (there are three). I was relived, but I knew we had to go to the second floor because it was included in our 3.50 ticket. The last floor is an elevator for 9 euro. I climbed the second part, which was worse, and we chilled on the second tier for a while. We decided not to climb to the top because 1) it was expensive 2) i was afraid and 3) we were high enough to get good, 3-second pictures. Going down was just as bad as going up, but at least I was decreasing in height.
- After climbing the amazing tower, we decied to find a grocery store.
- Found one, got some food and drinks and then went back to the lawn in front of the Effiel for a picknic. Our goal was to wait there ALL DAY for a picture of the Effiel at night. We sat there forever, listened to music, and drank some gross rum.. it rained on and off quickly a few times, but otherwise we were fine.
- Finally, after waiting all day, the sun set and the tower lights went on. There were awesome. Every hour for the first 10 minutes the tower "sparkles" lights go crazy on and off and it's super pretty. We stayed at the Effiel tower from like 11am to 11pm that night.
- I was a little afraid to take the metro home that late, but it was actually safer.
- There was a decent amount of people, but all the creepers had gone to bed or something.
The next day, our last, we woke up and I felt a little sick. I sucked it up, but I really didn't feel like doing much. I just wanted to be home (florence). We walked around for longer than I thought we would (went to the Louve, just saw it and it was this beautifully big and long building and the cathedral of Notre Dame) and eventually headed to the bus station to catch the next one to the airport. After waiting an hour, we caught a bus, but still spent around 3-4 hours in the airport but we were playing intense cards so it went fast. The flight ended up going out 4o minutes late. Let me just say, Ryanair (the cheap airfare here) is a mess. Big ol' rat race. No assigned seats and a lot of angry greedy people. Finally we boarded, their motto is Ryanair, always on time. It was a scary flight to say the least, I think they were trying to make up time. We were higher than I think I've ever been, the turbulance was the worst, and I think I lost my heart on the landing. We were going so fast into the landing, the trees were flying by and I was freaking out, I literally thought I was going to die. We hit hard and when the plane FINALLY came to a stop, I was like, I never want to fly again. (How am I going to get home?!?! hahaha) We caught the next train to Florence and just went to bed when we got home.
The next few days were just spent bumming around Florence and in Friend's Pub. The trip was great and I'm so glad I got to see such amazing places. Cari and I got along really well and we met some really great people. I fell in love with the metro but I despise planes even more now. We held up the leaning tower, drank guiness in dublin, and climbed the Effiel tower. Basically a really amazing spring break. So glad Cari came and we finally got to travel Europe like we have been talking about since high school.
Now, I'm left here, 2 weeks away from home and so much to do. I have 2 long papers, 1 Italian presentation, and 4 exams. I personally think it's crazy, but I have the weekend to get a lot done. The roommates and I have been spending every second we can get taking in everything from Florence we will miss. Today, our Italian teacher asked us to write down things we will miss from Florence using the 5 senses (in Italian). Julia started crying after Hilary said she will miss waking up to her "family" in the morning.. it was a train of tears as we all tried not to cry. Our teacher was so touched. It shows how much we really will miss it, but I mean, I can't wait to get home. Florence has been good to me, but there really is no place like home. Right now, I'm battling the misquitos every night. I think we all wake up with 4-6 new bites all over our body. I wake up 4 times every night to them buzzing in my ear. I haven't slept much because of it, but it's making me want to go home even more. So annoying! I hope they just leave me alone so I can sleep the rest of the time here! Ha, okay that's my rant for the day. But I guess I should shut up since it snowed the other day for you guys. Hahaha.. sucks to be you, oh wait, I'll be there in a week and a half. AHhhh.. so excited!
Alright, well I apologize for the long story, but at least you can scroll through it. My mom had to sit and listen to it for like 2 hours and she couldn't tell me to shut up, hahaha.. so you're lucky if you are reading this because you can skip any boring parts, and if you didn't, that's your own fault! :) Have a great weekend coming up, be happy you won't be writing 2 long papers and studying. See you all so very soon and I hope you will see the influence Florence had on me first hand. I will probably write either this weekend or next week. Can't believe I'm coming home soon! Take care all!
Much love!
Pace,
Marissa

Much love!
Pace,
Marissa
